The breed developed when the invading Romans bred their mastiffs with the local flock-guarding dogs. The Bernese is the only dog from Switzerland with a full coat.

Dogs of this breed were routinely used for multiple jobs, which included general farm work, flock guardian and draft work. pulling small wagons or carts. They have also been known to have done some avalanche rescue work. The Bernese makes a wonderful family dog wanting to be with its owner and to take part in every activity. They are loyal, steady, alert and heavily boned, they require about 3 years to mature so careful rearing is vital, and because their bones don't fully develop until they are a year old you must be very careful with the amount of exercise the puppies are given and must'nt let them go up stairs or jump on or off furniture. Also it is adviseable to take them to puppy socialisation as soon as you can as they are big dogs and  the sooner you have them under control rather than the other way round, you will be rewarded with a life time of devotion in return
